If it wasn't for this book, would barefoot/minimalist running be where it is now? What are your thoughts? Personally, I am not against it but not for it either. It great that it get's people get's people out to exercise. It's just not for me. About the book, I thought it was well pretty entertaining. Credible? Who knows.
What I thought the message the book was relaying in the two pics below
Evil Empire (Big running shoe companies)
Rebel Alliance (Barefoot/Minimalist advocates)
On another note, back when I was a little kid, we used to go help run the aid stations for the Kilauea Volcano Wilderness Marathon back in the 90's. As you can see in the link, you run through lava fields, forest and roads. I'll never forget the day I saw a guy running barefoot. Talk about a serious BAMF. This isn't him but I found a site with pics of the course.
Lastly, I apologize if this post makes no sense. I was up way to late playing Battlefield 3 which came out yesterday.

Loved Born To Run. It's the book that got me into triathlons, because it was always the idea of running a race that held me back. That book got me over the mental barrier running had built. And I was already sporting my VFFs so it played right in to my feelings at the time. And you're right, go on any minimalist/barefoot forum and that is one of the books held up as An Important Document.
I was encouraged to run with minimalist shoes by a long time running coach to help me with running injuries that took out my knees in 2009. I hadn't even heard of the book by the time I had made the switch. I couldn't go completely barefoot though. I have since read the book and enjoyed it. Ok, I didn't really read it, I actually LISTENED to the audio book while on long training runs!
Not sure where I stand. Lots of people are inspired. Two of my running friends swear by them...althoughnitbhas taken over a year for them to get used to them. I have met other people with plantar or it problems and it has helped tremendously. I was going to make the switch, but hubby and I had atalk and I have to admit I do like my shoes. Never read the book, but heard the gist of the book.

I'm wondering if it's a matter of improving or fixing your running form. Isn't it still possible to heel strike barefoot and with minimal shoes?
Actually, its very possible to heel strike in minimal shoes (or barefoot), however, that will not last long as you will obliterate your feet in no time.
Hey tricook. I checked your blog for some recipes on energy bars since I'm going to make some since I dilike the flavor of store bought kind but did not see any on you blog except for cliff bar attempt. Have you made and does it melt when you are biking? Sorry about typos. Please assist if you can. I'm too afraid to try stuff all the brands in the store because most make my stomach churn.
Okay.. Final comment for today. I am thinking about trying this. http://www.fezzari.com/blog/2011/05/09/make-your-own-energy-bars/
I thought about you because you try to be frugal as well.
@SME - The ones I made don't melt but get a little sticky like the other bars. I haven't eaten any while riding since most of my rides haven't been over 3hrs. I've mostly eaten them before biking or after since the stomach can only process so much at a time. Like I tell everyone, training is the best time for experimentation. For example, Powergel, Gu Gel, Clif Shot gels make me sick, however Hammer Gel works for me. Everyone's different.
With my recipe, I tried to make it organic and avoid high fructose corn syrup (thus using brown rice syrup and natural peanut butter) however, it does put a dent in your wallet.
So if you do try that recipe, you may want to substitute the maple syrup with the real stuff, brown rice syrup or honey. Just don't use the imitation stuff. Too much HFCS. The PB too. I used to love Jiffy and Skippy PB until I tried the natural stuff. Oh man, I will never go back.
Hope this all helps.
Thanks I will refer to this to remind me what I have to substitute. PB sometimes makes me nauseous- It's the oils. I will have to try something that has lower oil content. Don't have any in the house at the moment will look around.
@tricook... i want to try out that energy bar recipe too. can you reply to this comment with a link to your recipe post.
btw, i made the focassia bread again and this time i used the right amount of yeast. it came out great.
@Hawaiian - Glad it worked out for you! Here's the link http://tricook.blogspot.com/2011/05/homemade-clif-bars-round-2.html
Tri cook, I made some energy bars using almond butter, honey, shredded coconuts, and rice crisp with cranberries and sunflower seeds. I'll see how they turn out tomorrow. I admit I used chocolate chips too. Alomond butter was the one that is freshly made from whole foods so I guess natural oils from the nuts and no additional oils. I'm tempted to try the oats next.
